If you think you might be pregnant, it’s understandable to want answers as soon as possible. However, taking a pregnancy test too early can sometimes lead to inaccurate or confusing results.

Knowing when to test can help you get the most reliable information and determine your next steps.

At Birthright of West Chester, we provide free, confidential pregnancy testing and support. Schedule your appointment today to get answers you can trust.

Wait Until After Your Missed Period

Pregnancy tests work by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone your body begins producing after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus.

Because implantation occurs several days after ovulation, hCG levels need time to build before they can be detected. For the most accurate result, the Mayo Clinic recommends waiting until a day or two after your missed period to take a test.

Using your first morning urine can also improve accuracy because hCG concentrations are typically highest then.

What If Your Test Is Negative?

A negative result doesn’t always mean you aren’t pregnant.

If you tested before your body produced enough hCG, the test may not detect the pregnancy yet. If your period still hasn’t started after several days, consider taking another test.

Stress, illness, hormonal changes, significant weight fluctuations, increased exercise, or certain medications can also cause missed periods. If you continue to have concerns, speaking with a healthcare provider can help determine the cause of the delay.

If Your Test Is Positive

A positive pregnancy test is an important first step, but it doesn’t provide all the answers.

A pregnancy test cannot determine how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus, or whether the pregnancy is developing and has a heartbeat. You need this information to protect your health and make an informed decision.

Following a positive lab-quality pregnancy test with us, we may be able to refer you for an ultrasound to gather additional information and help you make informed decisions about your next steps.
